Murals of La Jolla was conceived in 2010 as a means to enhance the civic character of the community by commissioning public art projects throughout La Jolla. An Art Advisory Committee composed of the heads of the major visual arts organizations in La Jolla invites artists to create new artworks, all located on private property and all privately funded. The goals of Murals of La Jolla are to create a dialogue and to bring energy and vitality to the community through public art. An international roster of renowned artists creates provocative site-specific works, accessible to anyone in the public realm. Daily life experiences in our community have been transformed by these amazing artists and we are all the beneficiaries. There are currently 16 murals on view and the project has commissioned 49 artworks to date. Murals of La Jolla is a project of the Athenaeum, initiated by the La Jolla Community Foundation.
